Dental Restorations

The purpose of dental restorations isn’t just to reestablish a beautiful smile. Fillings, crowns, implants and bridges are essential to maintaining adequate tooth function and integrity. And, restorations can prevent further decay or damage. At Akron Smiles Dental Center, we have many restorative options available to meet the individual needs of our young patients.

Dental Restorations Fillings

If your child has a cavity, a filling may be recommended to replace the part of the tooth that was affected by decay. Fillings are also widely used by our dental team to repair fractured or broken teeth and to provide support to teeth that are worn down by nail-biting, grinding the teeth or other misuse. Some children find the procedure of getting a filling to be painful, as it requires the decayed area of the affected tooth to be removed. A local anesthetic will be used to numb the tooth and gum area, and our dental team will use care and gentle precision during the procedure to minimize your child’s discomfort. Akron Smiles Dental Center offers several filling material options, including silver amalgam, gold, porcelain and a composite resin that matches the color of the teeth.

If a tooth becomes cracked or significantly weakened from decay, your child may require a dental crown. A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that cover the entire visible portion of a tooth, and it is effective at not only improving appearance, but also at restoring the strength of the tooth. Depending upon the state of decay in the tooth and if the tooth’s pulp is damaged or infected, a root canal may be necessary before a crown can be place. Root canal procedures can be painful, and so can the preparation of the tooth for a crown. Local anesthesia is used, but some children may require dental sedation, such as nitrous oxide, to comfortably endure the treatment. Temporary crowns, made of stainless steel or acrylic, are generally used with primary teeth, while crowns made of porcelain, gold, ceramic or resin may be considered for permanent teeth.
